ETO Department
The Superyacht ETO Role Explained
What an ETO does on a superyacht, the certification route, what the role pays, and why demand keeps rising as yachts get more complex.
An ETO, or electro-technical officer, looks after a yacht’s electrical and electronic systems — navigation and communications equipment, entertainment systems, networks, lighting and automation. The role sits within the engineering department and has grown as yachts have become more heavily automated.
What a eto does on board
- Bridge and navigation electronics
- AV, IT and entertainment systems
- Networks, satellite communications and security systems
- Electrical fault finding and planned maintenance
What the job is actually like
Chasing faults across systems that were installed by different contractors and never designed to talk to each other. Navigation electronics, satellite communications, the guest network, lighting control and AV all land here. Much of the job is diagnostic work under time pressure, usually with guests aboard wanting the thing fixed now.
Certification and experience
These are the qualifications yachts ask for in a eto. Most yachts also want around 3 years behind them, though a strong reference from a captain counts for more than an extra season on paper.
- MCA ETO Certificate of Competency
- STCW
- ENG1
Typical experience sought: 3+ years · Reports to Chief Engineer
Getting into the role
Most ETOs arrive from a shore electrical or electronics background rather than working up through deck. Certification recognises that route directly. From ETO the path can lead into chief engineer territory on heavily automated boats, or into specialist AV and IT positions on the largest yachts.
What a eto earns
| Vessel | Typical range |
|---|---|
| All sizes | €6,000 – €8,000 per month |

Frequently asked
ETO: common questions
What is an ETO on a yacht?
An electro-technical officer looks after all electrical and electronic systems: bridge and navigation electronics, AV and entertainment, networks and satellite communications, security systems and electrical fault finding.
How do I become an ETO?
Through the MCA ETO Certificate of Competency, usually built on an electrical or electronic engineering background ashore or in the merchant fleet, with STCW and an ENG1 medical.
Is ETO a growing role?
Yes. Yachts carry substantially more integrated technology than a decade ago, and larger vessels increasingly treat a dedicated ETO as essential rather than optional. Demand consistently outstrips supply.
What does an ETO earn?
Pay reflects certification, vessel size and system complexity. We are compiling ranges from actual placements rather than publishing figures we cannot attribute.
