For Owners, Captains & Management
Hire a Yacht Captain for Your Vessel
Looking for a yacht captain? Every captain we introduce is someone we have spoken to and reference-checked with previous owners.
A yacht captain holds overall command of the vessel, its crew and everyone on board. They answer to the owner or management company for safety, navigation, budgets and compliance, and carry legal responsibility for every decision made at sea and in port.
What a yacht captain does on board
- Overall command, safety and navigation of the vessel
- Regulatory compliance including MLC, ISM and flag state
- Budget management and owner or management reporting
- Crew leadership, appraisal and discipline
What separates a good yacht captain from a qualified one
Tickets tell you what a captain may legally command, not what they can actually run. Ask about crew retention on their last two boats, how they handled a shipyard period that overran, and what they do when an owner asks for something unsafe. A captain who cannot answer that last one clearly is a risk.
Certification and experience
Every yacht captain we put forward has current certification checked before you see them, and references taken directly with previous captains or owners rather than read off a page.
- MCA Master 3000GT
- MCA Master 500GT
- STCW
- ENG1
- GMDSS
Typical experience sought: 8+ years · Manages Chief Officer, Chief Engineer, Chief Stewardess
The mistake we see most often
Hiring for the biggest ticket rather than the right programme. A captain who has run 90m charter operations is not automatically right for a 45m private boat with a family on board. Those are different jobs, and the mismatch usually shows up two months in.
How we find the right yacht captain for your boat
- Understand the yacht. Programme, crew structure and owner style, and the team they will be leading — chief officer, chief engineer and chief stewardess.
- Search and screen. A small number of genuine candidates, each spoken to individually, with MCA Master 3000GT and MCA Master 500GT confirmed before you see them.
- Reference in person. Direct conversations with previous captains and owners, not a form sent by email.
- Introduce and follow through. Introductions, then contact once they are aboard — the first eight weeks are when a placement either settles or does not.
Frequently asked
Hiring a yacht captain: common questions
What qualifications should a yacht captain have?
Licensing follows tonnage and cruising area. Below 500GT an MCA Master 500GT is standard; above that, Master 3000GT. All captains hold STCW basic safety training, an ENG1 medical and GMDSS. Command experience on a comparable vessel usually matters more than the certificate itself.
Should I hire a rotational or permanent captain?
Rotation is now common above roughly 50m, typically 2:2 or 3:3. It costs more because you employ two captains, but it reduces burnout and turnover on programmes with heavy use. Permanent single-captain arrangements still suit private yachts with lighter schedules.
How do you check a captain’s references?
By speaking to previous owners, managers and heads of department directly, not by reading written references. Conversations cover budget handling, crew retention under their command, and how they behaved when something went wrong.
Does the captain handle crew hiring themselves?
Usually yes. Most captains want to build their own team, and the strongest ones expect that authority. Recruitment often works best when the captain is placed first and then involved in choosing heads of department.
What makes a captain the right fit for one yacht but not another?
Programme and owner style. A charter yacht needs someone comfortable with constant guest turnover and commercial pressure; a private family yacht needs discretion and consistency. Technical competence is a baseline, not the deciding factor.
