What goes in each section
Header
Name, nationality, current location, phone with country code, email, and any visas held. B1/B2 is worth stating prominently if you have one — it decides whether you can work US-based programmes.
Profile
Two or three lines. Your role, your experience level, the kind of programme you are looking for. Written for a specific type of boat rather than as a general statement.
Certification
STCW and ENG1 first, with expiry dates, then role-specific tickets. Deck: Powerboat Level 2, PWC, Yachtmaster. Engineering: AEC or Y-tickets. Interior and galley: food safety, WSET, GUEST modules.
Sea service
Most recent first. Each entry should state vessel length in metres, motor or sailing, private or charter, cruising area, crew size, your role and the dates. Two or three lines on responsibilities is plenty.
References
Named previous captains or heads of department with contact details, and check they are happy to be contacted. "References on request" is a red flag in yachting, where reference calls are standard.
Before you send it
- Check it is genuinely one page
- Save as PDF, named Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf
- Confirm every certificate expiry is still valid
- Have someone else read it for typos
The full formatting rules are in the yachting CV format guide.
