Hire a Chief Steward/Stewardess

Looking for a chief stewardess? The role runs the interior and sets its tone, so I look at how a candidate leads a team as closely as their service standard.

A chief stewardess runs a yacht’s interior department — service, housekeeping, laundry, provisioning of interior stock and guest experience. They manage and train the interior crew, hold the interior budget, and are usually the person who sets the standard guests actually notice.

What a chief stewardess does on board

  • Running the interior team, rotas and standards
  • Guest liaison, preferences and trip planning
  • Interior budgets, provisioning and inventory
  • Service, housekeeping and laundry standards

What separates a good chief stewardess from a qualified one

Ask how they hand over to the next charter team and how they handle a stew who is technically good but difficult with the rest of the crew. The chief stewardess sets interior morale, and a strong one keeps junior crew for a full season rather than replacing them twice.

Certification and experience

Every chief stewardess we put forward has current certification checked before you see them, and references taken directly with previous captains or owners rather than read off a page.

  • STCW
  • ENG1
  • Food Safety Level 2
  • WSET (desirable)

Typical experience sought: 4+ years · Reports to Yacht Captain · Manages Steward/Stewardess, Housekeeping Stewardess

The mistake we see most often

Choosing on service polish alone. The technical side of the job is learnable; holding a small team together in a confined space through a long charter season is not, and that is the part that fails.

How we find the right chief stewardess for your boat

  1. Understand the yacht. Programme, crew structure and owner style, and how the chief stewardess will work with your yacht captain.
  2. Search and screen. A small number of genuine candidates, each spoken to individually, with STCW and ENG1 confirmed before you see them.
  3. Reference in person. Direct conversations with previous yacht captains and captains, not a form sent by email.
  4. Introduce and follow through. Introductions, then contact once they are aboard — the first eight weeks are when a placement either settles or does not.

Frequently asked

Hiring a chief stewardess: common questions

What does a chief stewardess do?

They run the interior: the team and rotas, guest liaison and preferences, interior budgets and provisioning, and the standards for service, housekeeping and laundry. On larger yachts they work alongside a purser.

What should I look for beyond service standards?

Leadership. The chief stewardess sets the tone for the largest department on most yachts, and interior turnover is usually driven by how the department is run rather than by the work itself.

What qualifications matter?

STCW, an ENG1 medical and Food Safety Level 2 as a baseline. GUEST programme modules, WSET wine qualifications and floristry or silver service training all indicate someone investing in the career.

When should a yacht carry a purser as well?

Generally above 60m, or where charter administration and crew logistics become a job in themselves. Below that, the chief stewardess usually absorbs the administrative load.

How do you assess interior leadership in recruitment?

By asking previous captains how the interior ran under them and whether junior stewardesses stayed. Retention within the department is the most reliable indicator available.
