For Owners, Captains & Management
Hire a Second or Third Officer
Looking for a second or third officer? Watchkeeping tickets are checked, references taken with previous captains, and candidates matched to your crew structure.
A second or third officer stands navigational watches, supports the chief officer with safety and certification work, and helps run the deck team. It is the first officer-level position after bosun and the point where a deck career becomes a bridge career.
What a second or third officer does on board
- Navigational watchkeeping at sea
- Passage planning and chart corrections
- Safety equipment maintenance and records
- Supporting deck operations and guest movements
What separates a good second or third officer from a qualified one
This is where you find out whether someone will make a good chief officer later. Look at how they handle a watch without supervision, whether they escalate problems early or hide them, and how they take correction. Yachts that hire well at this level rarely have to look outside for their next chief officer.
Certification and experience
Every second or third officer we put forward has current certification checked before you see them, and references taken directly with previous captains or owners rather than read off a page.

The mistake we see most often
Leaving the position unfilled to save a salary. On a boat with a demanding programme, the work does not disappear — it lands on the chief officer, who then burns out and leaves, which costs far more than the post you did not fill.
How we find the right second or third officer for your boat
- Understand the yacht. Programme, crew structure and owner style, and how the second or third officer will work with your chief officer.
- Search and screen. A small number of genuine candidates, each spoken to individually, with OOW 3000GT and STCW confirmed before you see them.
- Reference in person. Direct conversations with previous chief officers and captains, not a form sent by email.
- Introduce and follow through. Introductions, then contact once they are aboard — the first eight weeks are when a placement either settles or does not.
Frequently asked
Hiring a second or third officer: common questions
What does a second or third officer do?
They stand navigational watches at sea, maintain passage plans and chart corrections, and look after safety equipment records. In port they support deck operations, guest movements and tender runs.
What certification is required?
OOW 3000GT is the standard entry ticket, alongside STCW basic safety training, an ENG1 medical and GMDSS. Some yachts also want a Yachtmaster or tender driving qualification.
When does a yacht need a second officer?
Typically above 50m, or on any yacht running long passages where watch rotation cannot be covered by the captain and chief officer alone. Charter programmes with tight schedules often justify one earlier.
How is a third officer different from a bosun?
A third officer is a certificated watchkeeper on a bridge career path. A bosun leads deck labour and exterior maintenance without watchkeeping responsibility. Some yachts carry both; smaller ones choose between them.
