How to Become a Yacht Captain

What a yacht captain does, the licences required at each tonnage, how the career progresses from officer to master, and where the roles are.

A yacht captain holds overall command of the vessel, its crew and everyone on board. They answer to the owner or management company for safety, navigation, budgets and compliance, and carry legal responsibility for every decision made at sea and in port.

What a yacht captain does on board

  • Overall command, safety and navigation of the vessel
  • Regulatory compliance including MLC, ISM and flag state
  • Budget management and owner or management reporting
  • Crew leadership, appraisal and discipline

What the job is actually like

Far less time at the helm than people expect. A captain spends most of the day on paperwork, port agents, shipyard schedules, guest logistics and crew problems, then takes the boat out when it matters. On a busy charter programme the job is closer to running a small hotel that occasionally moves.

Certification and experience

These are the qualifications yachts ask for in a yacht captain. Most yachts also want around 8 years behind them, though a strong reference from a captain counts for more than an extra season on paper.

  • MCA Master 3000GT
  • MCA Master 500GT
  • STCW
  • ENG1
  • GMDSS

Typical experience sought: 8+ years · Manages Chief Officer, Chief Engineer, Chief Stewardess

Getting into the role

Eight to twelve years is realistic, running deckhand, bosun, officer of the watch, chief officer, then master. Each stage is gated by documented sea time and oral exams rather than time served. The step most people underestimate is the jump from chief officer to captain, where the job stops being technical and becomes managerial.

Frequently asked

Yacht Captain: common questions

How long does it take to become a yacht captain?

Typically eight to twelve years from deckhand. Progression runs deckhand, bosun, officer of the watch, chief officer, then master, with each stage gated by documented sea time and oral examinations rather than by time served alone.

What licence do I need to command a superyacht?

MCA Master 500GT covers smaller yachts; Master 3000GT is required above that. Both sit on top of OOW and Chief Mate certificates, with STCW, ENG1 and GMDSS throughout.

Do captains work rotation?

Above roughly 50m, commonly yes — typically 2:2 or 3:3. Below that, permanent single-captain positions remain the norm, particularly on private yachts with lighter programmes.

Can I move into yachting from the merchant fleet?

Yes, and the certification largely transfers. The adjustment is guest-facing work and the smaller, more personal crew dynamic, which is a different job from commercial shipping despite similar tickets.
