The Yacht Steward/Stewardess Role

What a yacht stewardess actually does, what the job pays, the training worth having before your first season, and how the interior career path works.

A steward or stewardess looks after a yacht’s interior — housekeeping, table service, laundry and guest care. It is one of the two main entry points into yachting alongside deckhand, and requires STCW basic safety training and an ENG1 medical rather than prior experience.

What a steward/stewardess does on board

  • Guest service, table setting and beverage service
  • Cabin housekeeping, laundry and detailing
  • Interior stock rotation and flower arranging
  • Supporting deck during guest movements

What the job is actually like

Cabins, laundry, silver, glassware and service, repeated to a standard that does not move. During guest trips the hours are long and the margin for error is small; between trips the work turns to deep cleaning and stock. Attention to detail is the whole job, and the people who thrive are the ones who genuinely notice things.

Certification and experience

These are the qualifications yachts ask for in a steward/stewardess. None of it is difficult to obtain, and attitude decides the rest.

  • STCW
  • ENG1
  • Food Safety Level 2
  • Silver service training (desirable)

Typical experience sought: entry level — first season considered · Reports to Chief Stewardess

Getting into the role

Entry level, with progression to second stew and then chief stewardess over roughly four to six years. Service, wine and floristry qualifications accelerate it, but time in front of demanding guests matters more. Some move sideways into purser work, which suits people who prefer administration to service.

What a steward/stewardess earns

Pay varies with vessel size, cruising programme and whether the position is rotational. See the salary guide.
